Description
Brother [John], prior of St Andrews, and the convent of the same place state that they are to be bound and accountable to Geoffrey of Berwick, burgess of Roxburgh, for twenty pounds, sixteen shillings and eight pennies of good and legal sterling for the wine sold and delivered to them by Geoffrey. They are to render [the money], faithfully and without delay, to Geoffrey, or whomever has and reveals this letter, in the villa of Berwick, at the feast of Pentecost in the year of the lord 1291. And if it happens that Geoffrey, or whoever has this letter, incurs any penalty, loss or expense on account of the money, [and] it is not rendered, the canons obligate themselves and their successors, and all their goods, secular and ecclesiastical, wherever they may be found, until the penalities, losses and expenses are restored by the provision of faithful men, without lawsuit and cost.
