Document 4/9/5 (Melr. Lib., no. 352)
- Description
- On 23 March 1305, in the church of Longnewton, an agreement was made between the abbot and monks of Melrose on the one hand, and Sir Adam called Blithman, rector of the church of Westerkirk (DMF) on the other, concerning a quarrel which related to all the secular teinds of the inhabitants of lands of the monks of Eskdale, [which was] first settled between the parties by the bishop of Glasgow, viz.: that the monks will receive in the future, all the major and minor teinds of the servants and secular-men inhabiting the said lands of the monks, [and] Adam and his successors will receive, and have, the burial taxes, oblations and offerings of the servants and secular-men inhabiting the said lands, along with 20 shillings annually from the monks at two times of the year, viz.: Pentecost and St Martin in winter, by reason of the care of the secular-men in habiting the land at Westerkirk, as fully and expressly contained in the sentence of the lord bishop relating to the teinds, with the time of the first render beginning at Pentecost in the year of grace 1306. And if the monks may have failed in the render of the money at the aforesaid times, or if any of the inhabitants of the land misbehave, penalties are specified.
