Description
At the same place [Montrose] on the same day [10 June 1296] the same witnesses as mentioned immediately before being present, and the Notary; the lord Herbert of Maxwell, knight, attained the trust and goodwill of the lord king of England in the company of the noblemen written immediately before, of his own accord; and he annulled whatever alliances, contracts, agreements, and pacts had been entered into in his name with the king of the French against the king of England, and entirely renounced them; and having taken the holy gospels and kissed them, he performed fealty to the king of England; and upon his fealty so performed, he made his letters patent composed in his name, sealed with his authentic pendant seal.
