Document 1/53/18 (RRS, v, no. 14)

Description
Robert, king of Scots, addresses his beloved chaplains, the abbot and monks of Arbroath Abbey, and states that he understood that their house was founded by his predecessors, the kings of Scotland, and was aggrandized by alms of the faithful of his kingdom, as well as by the alms of his predecessors and he himself. He also states that he understands that it is being greatly burdened the rendering of pensions. Therefore, by the tenor of the present [letter], Robert restrains Arbroath lest they should make any payment of a pension to any of their personae not doing their work, and he especially restrains them from making payment outside of the kingdom, unless the king, with his council, may have deemed it to be alright because Arbroath is able to produce the yield.
