Document 6/2/97 (IP, 91b)
- Description
- Since Ralph of Eglinton, and Thomas of Winchester have come to the faith and will of Edward, king of England, etc., they promise on their own behalf and that of their heirs, upon punishment of body and property, and whatever else they can forfeit, that they shall support him, and shall serve him well and loyally against all mortal men, every time they are called upon or summoned by their lord, the king of England, or by their heirs, and that if they shall come to know of anything harmful to them, they shall do all in their power to obstruct it, and shall make them aware of it. In order to hold to and keep these promises, they pledge themselves, their heirs, and all their goods; and they have furthermore sworn this upon the holy Gospels. As proof of this matter they have caused these letters patent to be written, sealed with their seals. Given at Montrose, 11 July, in the twenty-fourth year of the reign of the aforesaid King of England [1296].
