Description
Settlement of a dispute between Kelso Abbey and Melrose Abbey concerning the arrears of the annual payment of ten pounds and eight shillings which Melrose Abbey was owing to Kelso Abbey by reason of an amicable composition which was formerly entered into by them relating to certain teinds of Ugginges, [owed] to the parish church of Mow (ROX) belonging to Kelso Abbey. Finally, on the Monday nearest after the feast of Saint Luke the Evangelist in the year 1309, in the church of Saint James of Roxburgh, an agreement was made that Melrose Abbey, from the feast of Saint Martin in winter, all the way to the end of the two years immediately following, for the annual payment of ten pounds and eight shillings, and also for all the teinds [renderable] for increase of the food of the animals of William, called the English, who holds of Melrose Abbey within their tenement of Uddinges, and the men residing below him within the bounds of Ugginges, and similarly, for all the arrears of the year’s produce, except the teinds of Melrose which stayed behind at Attonburn, and additionally, in the villa of Mow; Melrose Abbey will render to Kelso Abbey, within the same monastery, for each of two years [stipulated above], twenty pounds of good sterling at two times of the year, viz.: half at the feast of Pentecost and the other half at the feast of Saint Martin in winter, [with] the time of the first render beginning at the feast of Pentecost in the year of grace 1310. Penalties are stipulated if Melrose fails to comply with the aforesaid.
