Description
William Fraser, bishop of St Andrews, notifies, by the tenor of the present [charter] that the noble man, William of Ferrers, son and heir of the late Sir William of Ferrers, the knight, gave and granted and also completely and absolutely, without any reservation, transferred all right that was belonging to him in the church of Leuchars (FIF), of the bishop’s diocese, along with two acres of land for the increase of his alms, to the prior and convent in the church of St Andrews, in pure and perpetual alms, for his soul and the souls of his predecessors and successors. The bishop approves, ratifies and authorizes by the present [charter] William’s donation and grant, wishing it to obtain perpetual strength. Additionally, the bishop states that the canons are currently being afflicted, especially by the destruction of their church, and for its quick reconstruction, they fell into in the trap of merchants. Therefore, the bishop gives, grants and perpetually confirms to the prior and convent, for their own use, and for the relief of their church, and for perpetual sustenance and hospitality, the church of Leuchars, with the teinds, lands, possessions, and with all the other rights and pertinents of the same, to be held and had by them and their successors by the present charter, so that they may pursue by divine office for the salvation of the bishop’s soul [and] his ancestors and successors, hoping to free them from the merchant’s trap. And based on the fact that the church of Leuchars is only a short distance from the monastery of St Andrews, the bishop wishes, and additionally grants, for him and his successors, that the prior [will nominate] one suitable canon from their monastery who should accept the cure of the church of Leuchars, and will answer to the bishop for the spiritual dues, to canons for the temporal dues, and to the [Augustinian] order for discipline, and the canon may have two suitable chaplains at the said church for continual ministry. The bishop reserves the episcopal dues.
