Document 4/33/29 (Newb. Reg., C.O., no. 13)

Description
William of Lamberton, bishop of St Andrews, records an agreement between Newbattle Abbey and Holyrood Abbey concerning a certain annual pension of sixty-five marks and twenty pennies of sterling [owed] by Holyrood for certain lands and saltpans which they hold from Newbattle at feu-ferme in the Carse of Callander (STL), [and are] owed for seven years past. The abbot of Newbattle, for himself and his convent, and the abbot of Holyrood, for himself and his convent, and also Master Robert of Kidlaw, doctor of decrees, rector of Pencaitland, and Brother Thomas, treasurer of Holyrood, procurator of the convent of the monastery, gave a corporal oath in which they submitted to the bishop’s ordination, without any opposition, and promised to observe it in all things and by all things, without fraud and evil trick, for all future time, in perpetuity. [It appears that the abbot of Newbattle, at the bishop’s supplication, relaxed to the abbot and convent of Holyrood half of the arrears of the annual feu-ferme owed to them, and that the bishop ordained that the abbot and convent of Holyrood render to Newbattle the other half of the arrears, viz. 138 shillings and three pennies, at payments of twenty marks each year, beginning at the feast of Pentecost in the year 1307. Penalties also appear to be stipulated for failure to comply; however, large sections of the charter have been damaged, so some information is unclear.]
