Document 1/51/14 (Stevenson, Docs., i, no. 328)
- Description
- J[ohn], king of Scotland, writes to his lord, lord Edward, king of England, lord of Ireland and duke of Aquitaine, noting that he understands by letters from his burgesses of Berwick that since they and their fellow-burgesses may have been sent to parts overseas searching for grain and following on to parts in Scotland, and transporting their goods, that is, wool, leather and sheep hides going from Berwick to parts overseas, before Edward’s mandate concerning this sort of preparations was set forth, and they may come next to the shores of England with their goods, whether they may land within the ports of England, Edward’s baillies, it is said, are arresting them throughout all places where their goods may be found, with ships carrying the said goods, and they with the ships are detained against surety and pledge, to the great injury to the realm. John thus asks and requires that this be remedied, if it pleases him, so that the said burgesses may have full restitution.
