Description
Hugh de Cressingham writes to Edward I noting that, according to the king’s command, his lord the earl [of Warenne], Sir Henry de Percy, Sir Robert de Clifford and others of his council and Cressingham himself, have treated with Sir Brian fitz Alan upon the custody of the land and realm of Scotland. He answered that he would not do it, alleging his inability and other reasons. But along with all this, he told Cressingham that he will take it upon the terms which the earl had, if you wish it, and in no other manner. He expects to have at Berwick the bishop of Glasgow, earl of Carrick and steward of Scotland to confirm and settle the peace discussed there on Thursday in the feast of St Laurence. As for the peace on the other side of the Scottish Sea, Sir Andrew of Rait is going to him with a credence and Cressingham asks the king to give little weight to it, as it is false in many points.
