Description
Anonymous letter [sheriff of Berwick?] to his lord [Edward I], informing the king that his burgesses and bakers of his villa of Berwick owe a custom to him concerning the grinding of their corn at his mills. The writer has cautioned them frequently to observe this custom as they were wont to do before the conquest and as they ought to do of right and have distrained them by many distresses, which distresses the warden has delivered by plevin. The burgesses answered that they have not their condition of burgesses as they used to have wherefore they will observe no such custom. Of this matter, the king is asked to send him his orders.
