1298 COLDINGHAM EXTENT CONTINUED: SWINTON (?) There are in demesne four and a half ploughgates (carucates) of land, which ploughgates were eight oxgangs (bovates). And which oxgangs were eight acres and a half, and which oxgangs were appreciated to 5s. A separate pasture contains about 24 acres, and is worth 20s per annum. There are 19 acres and 1 rod of meadow, which is worth 20s per annum. The waste which the men of the vill share is about 5 x 20 acres. There are two places for mills, for a watermill and a windmill, and there is one post for the windmill, and the watermill is waste, that if refurbished would be worth 8 pounds per annum. The advowson of the church is not surveyed, because it is 'in proprios usos' (for their own uses). There are 24 tofts of husbandmen and 12 ploughgates of land, worth 40d, which it was customary to rent for 6s 8d per year. And it is an oxgang of 11 and a half acres. A common brewhouse with free brewing rendering annually 24s 6d, now paying 6d per year. There are nine cottages, to which belong 12 acres, and they are worth 8s 6d per year, with each cottar paying annually 18d. FARMERS: William the tailor holds one toft and 13 acres of land, which is worth annually 16s. He also holds one toft and six acres of land, worth annually 3s. William the grieve holds one toft and three acres, worth 3s. Liulf holds one toft and six acres and it is worth 4s. Thomas the farmer holds one toft and one acre, and it is worth 15d. William the gardener held one toft and 12 acres, worth ... annually. Adam of Ridsdale holds two tofts and 18 acres and worth 8s. Alexander Mauberd holds one toft and six [acres] and worth... William Wowester holds one toft and six acres and worth ... FREEHOLDERS: Matilda, Juliana and Eva held two tofts and 22 acres of land, rendering ... and making 4 works in the autumn, if forfeited that land to be subject to inquest. Total 31 pounds, 17 shillings, 6 pence excepting the mills.
