Adrian IV, pope (d.1159)

Biography
Kelly, Oxford Dictionary of Popes, 174-175: Adrian was born perhaps in 1100, as Nicholas Breakspear at Abbot's Langley, near St Albans, Hertfordshire. He left to pursue an education at Arles, France, and may have been a monk of St Albans. He became an Augustine canon and was elected prior, then abbot of St Rufus near Avignon in 1137. He was made cardinal and bishop of Albano in 1149. From 1150 to 1153, he was papal legate in Scandinavia and upon his return to Rome he was soon elected pope, on 4 December 1154. He died on 1 September 1159.
