Thomas Randolph, earl of Moray (d. 1332)

Biography
Thomas was the son of Sir Thomas Randolph of Stichill, Roxburghshire, and of a daughter of Marjory, countess of Carrick and her first husband Adam of Kilconquhar. Thomas was thus a half-nephew to Robert I but had no royal blood. Randolph was the most impressive, loyal and capable of Robert I’s military and political followers. By February 1310 Robert had made him his lieutenant from Forth to Orkney and between 12 April and 29 0ctober he was created earl of Moray, with regality powers over a huge area of northern Scotland. Randolph distinguished himself in Anglo-Scottish war in all area of the kingdom, recovering Edinburgh castle in 1314, playing a major role at Bannockburn and contributing heavily to Edward Bruce’s Irish adventure 1315-18, and commanding numerous raids into northern England. In the entails of 1315 and 1318 outlining the succession to the Scottish crown Randolph was nominated by Robert I as the man to act as guardian of the realm for any underage heir [a role he would fulfil for Robert’s son David II after 1329]. Alongside these other roles Randolph also undertook diplomatic missions on behalf of Robert I, most notably securing a renewal of the Franco-Scottish alliance in 1326. After Robert I’s death on 7 June 1329 Moray became guardian for David II and knighted the new king shortly before his coronation in November 1331. Moray died at Musselburgh, near Edinburgh, on 20 July 1332 and was, significantly, buried near Robert I in Dunfermline Abbey. He married Isabel, daughter of Sir John Stewart of Bunkle, and they had two sons, Thomas and John, and two daughters. Thomas Randolph second earl of Moray (d. 1332), was killed at Dupplin Moor, and was succeeded by his brother, John Randolph, who was killed at Neville’s Cross. The brothers were childless, and Moray passed to the earl of Dunbar, husband of their sister Agnes Dunbar. https://doi-org.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/10.1093/ref:odnb/23121
