Balmerino Abbey (fd.1229)

Biography
Balmerino Abbey is located in Balmerino (FIF), in the diocese of St Andrews. It was built on land belonging to Richard Revel, nephew of Henry Revel, which passed to his brother, Adam of Stawell, after Richard's death perhaps in early 1225. In October 1225, Adam sold the estate to Queen Ermengarde for 1,000 marks. Balmerino was founded as a Cistercian house in honour of St Edward probably in December 1229, after the arrival of monks from Melrose, the mother-house. The abbey's foundation is sometimes given as 1227 while King Alexander II had granted the lands of Balmerino and Coultra in February 1231. Syllabus (Balmerino), pg. 7
