John of Heiton, precentor of Moray (d.1249×63)

Biography
Watt and Murray, Fasti, 289: John appears as precentor of Moray on 4 February and 20 March 1249. Watt, Graduates, 268: John was probably from Heiton (ROX) or Heaton, Northumberland, and might have had a brother, Adam of Hetune, whose sale of lands John witnessed in 1227×38. If so, he also had brothers Walter and Michael. He was probably the nepos of Hugh de Calder and his wife, Sarah. John is first found as a clerk (surname as 'Betun') in the service of Bishop Richard of Dunkeld (1203×10) and was master by December 1214; he was a canon of Dunkeld from around this time (1214×21). He continued to be called canon on 29 January 1226 and July 1225×29, when he was called John of Dunkeld. Between 1221×29 he was also called vicar of Aberlady (ELO) while by 5 March 1239 he was also a canon of Moray, holding the prebend of Duffus. After July 1242, when he still appears as rector of Duffus, he became the precentor of Moray (appearing in 1249). He was a papal judge-delegate in April 1217 and again in February 1220. He died before 13 April 1263, when his successor as precentor of Moray appears.
