John of Leicester, bishop of Dunkeld (d.1214)

Biography
Watt and Murray, Fasti, 124, 400: John of Leicester was archdeacon of Lothian from at least 17 June 1200 to at least 13 June 1212. He was elected bishop of Dunkeld on 22 July 1211 and was consecrated after 13 June 1212. He died on 7 October 1214. Watt, Graduates, 336-7: John was presumably from Leicester in England and is likely to have been a relative of Roger, bishop of St Andrews (d. 1202), who was a son of Robert de Breteuil, earl of Leicester (d. 1190); thus, he was a cousin of William I of Scotland and, indeed, appears in his familia. He was perhaps 'John, clerk of the lord elect [Roger]' in a charter dated 1189×94. He was Master by February 1193/4. He obtained office of archdeacon of Lothian October 1199 × June 1200, which he held until his election to the see of Dunkeld in July 1211. He died at Cramond, Midlothian and was buried at Inchcolm and his remains were moved within the abbey there in 1266.
