David Lindsay (I), son of William (II) (d.c.1220)

Biography
Barrow, RRS, ii, index: David was son of William of Lindsay (d.c.1205) and, like his father, was also a justiciar of Lothian, ca. 1208 –ca. 1215 David had three sons, David (II), justiciar, Gerard and Walter, and perhaps a daughter Alicia. Died in or around 1220 (MHH) Scots Peerage explains that David’s mother was Alienora, ‘daughter and eldest co-heir of Gerard de Limesi (great-grandson of Randolph de Limesi, tenant in chief of forty lordships in 1086, and founder of the priory of Hertford) by Amicia de Bidun’. The evidence appears to be primarily Testa de Nevill, 286. This would explain the name Gerard, which David (I) named one of his sons. David (I) apparently married a woman named Margerie, who seems to have had rights in Barton in England. Gerard is called her son (_CDS_, i, no. 1614). Sir Robert of Pinkney, a claimant in the Great Cause, claimed to be a great-grandson of Margerie, and that she was a sister of Kings Malcolm and William. Lady Margerie of Lindsey witnessed a charter of her son David (II) to Dunfermline Abbey, which makes clear that she was the founder of the house of nuns Elcho Priory. (_Dunf. Reg._, no. 190)
