Description
David, king of Scots, since Hugh Douglas, lord of Douglas, brother and heir of the late James, lord of Douglas, knight, resigned by staff and baton, of his own free will, 26 May 1342 in the presence of the king and many prelates and nobles (procerum) of the kingdom at Aberdeen, all the lands which he held in chief in the kingdom, namely all the lands of Douglasdale (LAN), Carmichael (LAN), Selkirk Forest (SLK), Lauderdale (BWK), Bedrule (ROX), Eskdale (ROX), Staplegordon (DMF), Buittle in Galloway (KCB), Romanno (PEB), and of the (burgh) ferme of Rutherglen (LAN). The king gives these lands to William Douglas, son and heir of Archibald Douglas, knight, brother of the late James Douglas, to be held by the male heirs of his body lawfully procreated as the aforesaid James held them, for service owed and wont. If he dies with no such heirs, the king wills that the lands shall pass to William Douglas, knight, lord of Liddesdale, and his lawful male heirs. And if he dies with no such heirs, the king wills that the lands shall pass to Archibald Douglas, son of the late James, lord of Douglas, and his lawful male heirs. And if he dies with no such heirs, the lands shall revert to the nearest heirs of Hugh Douglas.
