Document 2/15/4 (ESC, no. 42)

Description
Archbishop Ralph and brethren of Canterbury to Alexander, king of Scots; stating that episcopal see, which is held to be greatest in his realm, has lacked its shepherd for a great time; he exhorts him to put an end to so great a loss, and of his good will recall to that see pastor whom he has canonically elected and which Ralph has legally sent to him. Since no fault is apparent - either in Alexander or [bishop-elect] - whereby this may not be worthily done, Ralph does not understand how church can appoint another bishop. Wherefore, for whatever reason this has been delayed until now, for sake of his glory, [Alexander should] recall to first degree of his affection and to office laid upon him a man who is of use to king, and who has been nobly trained from his boyhood in law of God. Ralph prays that Alexander will send a written reply.
