- David, king of Scots, since Roger of our beloved Aulton founded a chantry for a priest celebrating the divine office in perpetuity at the great altar in the church of St James of Roxburgh, for the honour of God and the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, and Roger gave all the lands, renders and possessions of Aulton, four oxgangs of land in the vill of Heiton (ROX) with six burgages in the vill of Roxburgh, and all his land of Wester Softlaw (ROX), which charters of Roger he has diligently inspected and caused to be examined by his council; for the salvation of his soul and those of his ancestors and successors, he had approved, ratified and confirmed all the donations made by Roger; holding in free, pure and perpetual alms, as his charters attest. And he firmly prohibits his justiciars, sheriffs, coroners, grieves and their baillies from interfering.
