Description
David, king of Scots, has seen, inspected and understood certain charters of Lords William and Robert, kings of Scotland, his predecessors, in which charters they granted and confirmed his beloved burgesses of Perth their merchant gild, except for the fullers and weavers, within the sheriffdom of Perth and within the River Tay from Drumlay (Abertay Sands); prohibiting also that any foreign merchants with their ships bearing goods may presume to come up the Tay past Drumlay to sell or break bulk except with the licence of the merchants of the burgh of Perth; and he prohibits any foreign merchant from buying or selling within the sheriffdom and liberty of the burgh of Perth outwith the burgh, although foreign merchants coming with their merchandise to Perth where they may sell them in gross or cut into cloth, but they may only sell to merchants of the burgh of Perth; also prohibiting anyone within the sheriffdom of Perth from making dyed or mixed cloth; and prohibiting all foreign merchants of whichever nations from remaining within the burgh of Perth alongside the burgesses; and prohibiting any taverns in the sheriffdom except in vills where the lord is a knight; and he grants his firm peace to those who take timber to the burgh of Perth; and he prohibits anyone from disturbing the sale of goods within a league of Perth under penalty of his forfeiture; which penalties and escheats he has granted may be levied annually within the sheriffdom of Perth annually, and delivered to the grieve and baillies of Perth for the work of the Bridge of Tay in pure and perpetual alms. The king approves, ratifies and confirms these charters of concession, donation and confirmation in all their points and articles.
