Document 2/10/1 (ESC, no. 41)

Description
Eadmer, former bishop-elect of Scotland [St Andrews] to Alexander, king of Scotland; renders thanks to his excellence for good will which he has shown towards him. He must ascribe that affair has turned out differently from what was course of their common purpose. What he has learnt upon his departure from bishopric, he would make known to his confidence, if he were given opportunity to speak privately with king. Eadmer makes known that all who heard how he was chosen, received and installed in bishopric and was put in place of bishop, declared than he can neither resign bishopric nor can another be put in his place while he lives He did resign it, but under influence of force which he was unable to oppose. Seeing that constant discord and endless hostilities were directed against him, on king's behalf by those whom he knew to be king's friends, unless he abandoned bishopric, he resigned what was taken from him and what he could not keep. If king wishes to assist his return, he shall undertake journey and in all things obey his will.
