Description
Albin, bishop of Brechin, makes known that when abbot and convent of Lindores presented to him Master William of Mitford, clerk, to vicarage of Dundee (ANG), saving assessment of vicarage, the bishop admitted William to same and instituted him in same. He also assigned assessment of vicarage, that is, that vicar would receive altarage, paying 10 marks at Easter. Since same vicar would not undertake to pay said portion, the bishop admonished him. Concerning this, apostolic letters were directed to prior of May and provost of church of St Mary of St Andrews. The vicar himself has paid abbot and convent from fruits of church, [but] reported to official of Aberdeen and his colleagues that he could not be supported from remaining profits. Further letters were directed to abbot of Kinloss and his colleagues on behalf of vicar. At length, having been called before judges, on Saturday after feast of Exhaltation of the Holy Cross, 1256 [16 Sept.], in church of Friars Preachers of Perth before bishops of Dunblane and Brechin and other prelates, the vicar took an oath that he would make payment to abbot and convent and bishops committed said vicar to assessment of damages and expenses owed to abbot and convent and, for further peace, he has renounced any claims. The bishop has thus ordained that, saving to abbot and convent said annual portion, the said vicar shall satisfy abbot and convent the 10 marks and arrears of portion for damages and expenses, up to a final sum of 50 marks.
