Document 3/21/23 (Neville, Strathearn, no. 22)

Description
Gilbert son of Ferteth, earl of Strathearn, has given and granted to Inchaffray Priory liberty to hold a court in pure and perpetual alms, for the trial of men staying on their lands, for pleas that would normally come to his comital court. He also instructs his friends, his men and his bailies, that is, his steward and his judex to proceed without delay to hold the priory’s court, when requested by the canons. The prior and canons are to have all forfeitures and all that pertains to his court, saving the bodies of convicted criminals. He also gives them licence to take poinds from his tenants in place of the teinds which he gave them, if the payment is not made at the two terminals. He also instructs his serjeants firmly on pain of forfeiture not to cause injury or disturbance to the canons.
