Document 2/132/14 (Scotia Pontificia, no. 117)

Description
Pope Lucius III writes to [Roland], bishop-elect of Dol and [Silvanus], abbot of Rievaulx, defining their legatine commission to investigate the schism at St Andrews. After general comments about changing predecessors’ rulings, Lucius writes that Hugh, having been appointed bishop for the church of St Andrews in the time of Pope Alexander, believed he had been troubled in his jurisdiction by Alexander, and, coming to the apostolic see, insisted for a long time that his case be heard. Since another, John, had been promoted to St Andrews, Lucius was inattentive, yet Hugh’s relentless demand for justice finally gained him a hearing. The pope commends the business to the judgment of [Roland and Silvanus]. If perchance his predecessor made a mistake or was deceived, Hugh should be restored.
