Document 2/140/63 (A-S Relations, no. 6)
- Description
- Pope Gregory IX writes to the king of Scotland, noting that the king of England recently caused to be recounted in his presence that there was once a friendly agreement between Henry, his grandfather, and John, his father, on one hand, and William, king of Scotland, on the other, as a result of which William did liege homage and swore fealty to these kings, and to the present king, and Alexander did the same to the latter two; and his successors and the earls and barons of Scotland are bound to offer the same to him and his successors, and the earls and barons are to support the kings of England against the kings of Scotland, if perchance the latter should not keep the agreement. If the subjects of the one should flee to the realms of the other, in fear of punishment for the crimes which they have committed, the later and his subjects ought not to receive them in his land. The subjects of either king shall hold those lands, in the realm of the other, which they had before the agreement. The king [of England] has begged the pontiff to give weight to this agreement by supporting it, thus the pope had decided to direct Alexander’s attention to peace and avoid scandal and discord and to observe the agreement in the prudent manner.
