Description
Pope Honorius III writes to the bishop of Dunkeld, and Master J[ohn] of Hetun and S[imon] of Lindsay, canons of Dunkeld, noting that Eustace, canon of St Andrews has shown in his presence that since the bishop of St Andrews, by a mandate of Pope I[nnocent], his predecessor, consecrated the bishop of Caithness, who was prepared to supply an oath of faith and obedience, [but] he refused to receive the same and no oath was given. Besides this, he confirmed the elections without papal dispensation of A[braham] and H[ugh], bishops-elect of Dunblane and Brechin, although they are sons of priests, and consecrated them as bishops. He also obtained letters of his same predecessor concerning the improvement of the church of St Andrews and impeded the improvement three times. He also imprisoned men of the chapter of the same church, who were labouring towards these improvements. He presumed to absolve the céli De from St Andrews who had been excommunicated and to promulgate sentences of excommunication on certain of the chapter, and disregarded appeals reasonably made to the papal see. He further occupied the villa of Clerkington (ELO) which pertained to the chapter, and when he was bishop of Glasgow, before his postulation was approved by the papal see, he transferred himself to the church of St Andrews and proceeded to celebrate divine services. The pope thus permits the said canon, whether through himself or the bishops of Glasgow and Moray, to submit his case and commands that the addressees investigate these accusations and remit their findings to the pope.
