- Pope Alexander III writes to Alfred, abbot of Cambuskenneth, and the brethren there, taking them into his protection; all the possessions and goods which they have or may acquire by papal permission, by the liberality of kings or the gifts of the faithful, may remain with the abbot and his successors, including the church of Clackmannan (CLA) with 40 acres of land, the priest’s toft in the same villa and the easement, the church of ‘Egglyge’ (St Ninians or Kirkton, STL), from the gift of the king of Scots, the villa of Kettlestoun (WLO) with its pertinents, and the teinds of all the king’s pleas and profits of Stirling and Stirlingshire, and of Callander (STL), one toft in the burgh of Stirling, another toft in Linlithgow (WLO), and the liberties, customs and men of Cambuskenneth, granted by the king, 50s. of the cain of Perth, the mill of Clackmannan, except the multure of the king’s manse as often as he comes to that villa, and the multure of the provost’s own manse, the land of Cambuskenneth, the fishing between the said land and Polmaise (STL), and one net in the water; also the land of Cowie (STL), with the forest and pertinents, the land of Tullibody (CLA), which is between the water of Cowie and the land of Logie (STL), 40s. of the king’s rent of Stirling and the cain of one ship, one saltpan, and as much lands as pertains to one of the king’s saltpans, the teinds of the king’s demesne of Stirling, the island between Polmaise and Tullibody, one full toft in the king’s burgh of Inverkeithing, also the free right of burial in that place, reserving the right of parish churches. The abbey is exempt from tithes on new lands brought under cultivation by them or at their expense. They are also exempt from tithes on the offspring of their animals. Finally, on the death of their abbot, they may choose a successor.
