Document 2/59/2 (Glas. Reg., no. 152)

Description
Master H[ugh] of Potton writes to his associate, Master R[obert] of Hertford, noting that on Sunday, before the Ascension of the lord around the ninth hour, he received Robert’s letter in which was contained that he should have resigned the church of Dryfesdale (DMF) by his counsel because Hugh firmly believes that his lord bishop had conferred upon him the archdeaconry [of Glasgow], which is vacant. But because it is withheld, he refused to undertake anything which might disturb his conscience. Thus, he relinquishes the ordination of the church of Dryfesdale for which his lord, according to the tenor of his charter, may provide either to Hugh or Robert a rent of 20 marks or he shall confer upon Hugh the archdeacony. He enjoins Robert to appeal on behalf of his right under the testimony of good men so that the reputation of the bishop be preserved and his right uninjured.
