Document 2/140/94 (Theiner, no. 99)

Description
Pope Gregory IX writes to the bishops of Glasgow, Moray, and Caithness, noting that Stephen and Richard, clerks, procurators of the dean and chapter of Aberdeen have related to him by their letters that the same is now without a pastor; the clergy of Aberdeen deputed four of the chapter and three of the clergy to make the election. They elected the abbot of Arbroath, and obtained the king’s consent, which the dean, chapter and clergy now pray for confirmation and consecration. If the election has been made of a fit person, and canonically, the above bishops are to establish it, consecrate the abbot, receive his oath according to the form sent in the accompanying bull, and cause him to receive the obedience of the clergy and people of the diocese of Aberdeen. If not, they are to annul the said election and proceed to make another.
