Document 4/15/1 (SEA, i, no. 227)

Description
Agreement is formed between Sir Hugh, bishop of St Andrews, and Earl Duncan (II of Fife). The bishop gives to the earl and his heirs a certain mill on church land within the bishop’s feu of Dairsie (FIF), and a stank, adequate access and a place beside the mill for winnowing, and other assigned easements, as contained in the bishop’s charter. The earl and his heirs render annually to the bishop and his successors half a mark at Martinmas, and to the church of Dairsie the correct teinds of the mill. If the bishop’s mill is broken or something happens so that it is not possible to grind at the mill his grain should be ground at the earl’s mill without multure in the first place after that, which will be at ‘Gramet’. If the bishop’s men grind there, they shall render multure just like the earl’s men. If anything should happen between the bishop’s men in the earl’s mill or in places deputed to him, the forfeiture and plea will be the bishop’s; the same will apply to the earl, mutatis mutandis. If contention arises in these places between both sets of men, the forfeiture will be agreed between the bishop and the earl.
