- Description
- An agreement is formed between Newbattle Abbey and Holyrood Abbey whereby the abbot and convent of Newbattle surrenders at feuferme to Holyrood Abbey all the lands and all the salt-pans which they held in the Carse of Callander (STL) of the gift of Kings David, Malcolm, William and Alexander, and the abbots of Dunfermline and Kelso, the master and brothers of the Temple of Balantrodoch (ELO) and David of Lindsey, to be held with all just pertinents, including farms, water, fishing, pannage, pastures, mills, roads, manure, moors, marshes and all other liberties and easements, rendering yearly to the monks of Newbattle 65 marks 20d., half at Pentecost and half at Martinmas. The monks shall answer for the annual payment of three farms of salt-pans to the houses of Dunfermline, Kelso and Balantrodoch (MLO). If Holyrood Abbey does not pay within fifteen days of the appointed time, they will pay to the gate-keeper of Newbattle 40s. for the uses of the poor beggars. If one party wishes to go back on this agreement, they shall pay to the other party a penalty of £1,000. Both parties shall place themselves under the jurisdiction of the bishops of St Andrews and Glasgow, who will compel the parties to observe this agreement, with ecclesiastical censure if necessary.
