- Notes
- The name ‘Ougelby’ is unknown, and is unlikely to be a version of Ogilvie. Perhaps William was a follower of Bishop Richard of Dunkeld (1170-78), who confirmed the gift in C.A. Rental, no. 40. See also RRS, ii, no. 275. It is likely, considering the nature of the source, that this is a garbling of Ingelby, with the ‘n’ read as a ‘u’ and the ‘O’ read as an ‘I’. members of the Ingelby family are attested in 13th century; see for example Dunf. Reg., no. 202. It is possible that the Ingelby family were associated with Ripley charter (?) in Yorkshire.
Confirmed by Bishop Richard of Dunkeld, 1170×78 (2/6/5) and by King William, 1177×90 (1/6/249).
