Document 3/552/1 (Neville, Strathearn, Add. Chrs., no. 30)

Description
Robert, brother of the steward of Strathearn, makes known that there was a dispute between himself and Lindores Abbey, which was heard by the papal judges-delegate, the archdeacon of Dunkeld and the prior and sacrist of Arbroath Abbey, and that an indictment was served against him for depriving the monks of their access to timber from the wood of Glenlichorn in Strathearn (PER) and from repairing buildings in their land of Feddal. The monks sought restoration and wished that Robert be compelled by ecclesiastical censure to relinquish his claim. At length, Robert, having been suspended from entering the church, and later excommunicated for his contumacy, and having a trouble conscience concerning this matter, thought it better to withdraw from the suit. He has taken an oath that he would permit the said religious and their men to enjoy freely the right to take material from the said wood and not to harass or disturb them. He submits himself to the jurisdiction of the archdeacon of St Andrews or his official.
