- Description
- Bernard, abbot of Arbroath, and the convent of the same place state that brother John, abbot of the monastery of Arbroath, retired, and was absolved from certain things by the lord bishop of Saint Andrews, from all saints day in the year 1309, at which time the abbot was able to do nothing which was able result in injustice or trouble for the monastery, and [the same can be said of the actions] sequestered by the court and administration of the monastery. Regarding this, the monks want everyone to know that they revoked and now too they revoke, by the tenor of the present charter, an amount [of money] granted to a procurator which was to be procured at church of Haltwhistle (Northumberland) and was made two years before the date of the present [charter]. From the time of the surrender and revocation, they want everyone to know that the abbot or the procurator were not able to alienate or diminish the goods of the monastery, or to make anything whatsoever which could bring injustice. And if something after this is to be entered into or alienated by the procurator which brings about the injustice of the monastery, then the monks disapprove of and detest of his action.
