Description
Memorandum that in the year 1313, Henry, bishop of Aberdeen, with the consent, assent and good will of his whole chapter, gave, granted and established by his charter, along with his seal and the common seal of his chapter, to Coupar Angus Abbey the church of Alvah (ABD), situated in the bishop’s diocese, with all the lands, freedoms, and easements pertaining to the church, for their sole use [and] for the sustenance of divine worship in the monastery, and for the relief of the state of the monastery because of the war. The abbot of Coupar Angus, whoever he may be at the time, will provide to the bishop and his successors, by reason of the church of Alvah, the obedience as is necessary, and the abbot and convent will provide a suitable vicar to serve at the church, who will undertake the cure of souls, and he will annually receive ten pounds of sterling from the abbot and convent at two times of the year, viz.: half at the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist and the other half at the feast of the purification, from which the vicar will render to the bishop and archdeacon the ordinary burdens. The abbot and convent will manage to acquire one toft and one croft for the vicar [which is] near the church and will make sure to construct a building in the toft for the reception of ordinary, which building, the vicar will sustain at his cost. The abbot and convent will manage to acquire pasture for the vicar’s animals, following the customs in the diocese of Aberdeen. Additionally, the abbot and convent will annually give six marks of sterling to one perpetual chaplain divinely celebrating in Aberdeen Cathedral, which chaplain should be chosen and admitted by the dean and the chapter of Aberdeen, and he is also be supported by the monks in other specified ways. Penalties are stipulated for the monks’ failure to comply.
