- Description
- The mayor, reeves and community of Berwick address the king as ruling by diving providence the three realms of England, Scotland and Ireland, and inform him that no tongue can tell their anxieties, and that by reason of the dearth of all kinds of grain in Scotland some of their fellow burgesses had shipped grain from abroad, and while off the English coasts and ports, the King’s bailiffs had arrested their ships and cargos to their heavy loss and damage. Their names are William of Orford and others whom the bearer will relate to the king and their goods and vessels were arrested at Yarmouth, Erewell, Blakeney, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and elsewhere. Also Sir Alexander de Balliol, chamberlain of Scotland is due them £44 6s. 10 ½d. for ‘super expenses’ as appears in a compotus delivered by them to Sir William de Charleton and others auditors of the same, formerly the king’s lieutenants at Roxburgh. They send their fellow burgess Nicholas of Pampesworde as their attorney specially empowered to lay these matters before the king and pray remedy.
