Document 2/71/26 (CDS, ii, no. 1624)

Description
The abbot and convent of Dunfermline show the king and council that they are seised by gift of King David of a town called Kirkcaldy (FIF) which they hold as a free burgh, but have no market there. Wherefore they pray the king that as the said town is one of the most ancient burghs of Scotland, and is ten leagues or more from any market town, he would grant them a weekly market there on Thursday and a yearly fair on the octaves of Easter, to last for three days. They also show the king and council that as they hold by gift of King David their founder, the land called Musselburgh in warren, and have other lands which adjoin the sea, that is, Kinghorn, Kirkcaldy, Newburn and Fothrif, in which there are and they might have ‘coniggers’ and other easements to their profits, that the king would permit them to hold these perpetually in warren.
