Robert Wickhampton, bishop of Salisbury (d.1284)

Biography
Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae 1066-1300, iv, 1-7, 7-12, 73-76, 110-17: Robert was a clerk, but not yet a canon, on 28 December 1241, 16 August 1242 and around 1240×45. He first appears as a canon on 7 December 1243 and became dean of Salisbury before 17 January 1258/59. While dean, it is presumed that he also held the prebend of Heytesbury. He was described as a papal chaplain when he was granted a papal dispensation to be promoted to bishop, ‘notwithstanding his illegitimacy’ on 1 February 1263. He was elected bishop of Salisbury on 23 February 1271 and consecrated on 13 May 1274 at Lyons. He died, blind, on 24 April 1284. He might be related to Master Thomas of Wickhampton, archdeacon of Salisbury.
