- Kelly, Oxford Dictionary of Popes, 130: Benedict was a Roman by birth whose father was named Hildebrand who became a monk. Benedict was a cardinal priest of S. Teodoro when he was elected to the papacy in September or October 972, being consecrated in January 973. In June 974, he was seized and imprisoned in Castel Sant’ Angelo during which time, Franco, a deacon was consecrated as Pope Boniface VII. In July, Benedict was assassinated by a priest named Stephen.
