Victor III, pope (d.1087)

Biography
Kelly, Oxford Dictionary of Popes, 157-58: Victor was born Daufer or Daufari around 1027 and was related to the Lombard dukes of Benevento. He had been a hermit, then a monk at Benevento where he took the name Desiderius, later becoming abbot of Monte Cassino on 19 April 1058. In May 1059 he was made a cardinal priest and papal vicar. He was elected on 24 May 1086 but remained abbot of Monte Cassino until three days before his death, on 16 September 1087. He died at Monte Cassino and was beatified in 1887. His feast day is 16 September.
