Urban II, pope (d.1099)

Biography
Kelly, Oxford Dictionary of Popes, 158-60: Urban was born Odo (Eudes) to nobles parents around 1035 at Châtillon-sur-Marne, France. He studied under St Bruno at Rheims, was made canon and then archdeacon there and around 1068 became a monk of Cluny before being raised to prior. He was created cardinal bishop of Ostia around 1080 by Gregory VII and was legate in Germany in 1084-85. He was elected on 12 May 1088 at Terracina, near Gaeta, to the papacy and died on 29 July 1099. He was beatified in 1881 and his feast day is 29 July.
