Cospatric, earl of Dunbar, has granted and given in perpetual alms to St Ethernan of May and brothers there one full toft next to his port of Biel (ELO), free and quit from all custom.
22 August 1138 X 1159
perhaps 22/Aug/1138 × 1153
Accession of Earl Cospatric (II) of Dunbar × papal confirmation to Reading Abbey (_Papsturkunden- Holtzmann_, PU England, iii, no. 126); possible date if this charter pre-dates the establishment or conversion of the monks there.
A.A.M. Duncan has suggested that the style ‘earl of Dunbar’, which is not otherwise attested this early, may have been a later scribal addition. The reference to St Ethernan and a community of ‘brothers’ may suggest that this donation predates the monastic settlement from Reading.
