Description
John, king of Scotland, noting the special affection he has for the kings and realm of France, desiring this to continue in the future, declares that through William, bishop of St Andrews, Matthew, bishop of Dunkeld, John de Soules and Ingram de Umfraville, knights, his dear and faithful attorneys, procurators and special messengers, a contract of betrothal and marriage between Edward, his son and future heir, and a niece and relative of the said king [was concluded]. He notes that a league of mutual friendship has been agreed between the said king of France and him, and the inhabitants of his realm through the said procurators, as contained in letters of the king of France: Philip, king of France has inspected, among other things, [etc.] which agreement he wishes and approves as holding firm. John concludes that by these letters he has ratified that the prelates of his realm, the earls, barons and other nobles, and the communities also approve and promise to observe this treaty and agreement.
