Document 1/53/288 (RMS, i, App. 1, no. 59)

Description
King Robert I has granted the captains and all the men of Galloway that if any Galwegian man who has been accused (supradicto) by the sergeands of Galloway may have good and faithful assize of the country (patria) and that they may not be held to purgation or aquittance according to the ancient laws of Galloway; the king reserves the four pleas of the crown as well as matters touching on treason and killing (interfectionem) of those born in other kingdoms and their prosecution. Any Galwegians convicted by the aforesaid assize will pay the king 10 cows for whatever accusation and no more. And if anyone is convicted by the king's suit or over treason or killing of foreigners, they will be in the king's will over life and limb. And if any sergeand or king's officer of Galloway is accused over any matter touching on his office, he will be acquitted and purged by the whole acquittance of Galloway owed and accustomed. And in other matters relating to the pursuit of peace, they shall be held to the ancient laws of Galloway.
