Pope Paschal II, on the urging of King Alexander, answers questions put forth by Bishop Turgot of the Scots, which had been raised about Ember Days, ordination, the Eucharist, and confession. He directs that they should observe the ancient customs of the Roman church; accordingly, fathers Calixtus, Leo, Gelasius and other Roman pontiffs had determined four of the times for fasting at Quadragesima, the first of the week, principal holy days and Pentecost. The confession of sins is to be made to the blessed apostle, James. The pope also sends a little book to Turgot containing excerpts on these institutions.
