Description
An agreement is formed between the abbot and convent of Melrose and the abbot and convent of Holywood concerning the rights of patronage and ownership of the church of Dunscore (DMF), made in the presence of Sir John, bishop of Glasgow, Master Nicholas, archdeacon of Teviotdale, papal judges-delegate. The amicable agreement was made at the wish of the said judges and the consent of the parties, whereby Melrose Abbey renounced and quitclaimed to Holywood Abbey all rights and claims that they had or could have in the church of Dunscore with the right of patronage. The abbot and convent of Melrose and all their men remaining within the parish of the church of Dunscore, shall be free and immune from all manner of greater and lesser teinds, and all monies demanded, excepting mortuary and spousal dues together with silver, wax, debts, and common oblations which jointly follows cure of souls to be reverted to the vicar of the place, and nevertheless, through the said vicar they will be able to be expelled from those who are of the ferme of the abbot and convent of Melrose within the said parish or who have houses; each and every vicar of the church of Dunscore, shall perform all ecclesiastical duty and sacrament to the mercenaries of the abbot of Melrose, although they do not have houses within his parish. The abbot and convent of Holywood will be present in full or will be present through their vicar to the abbot of Melrose and their men, or else the abbot will hold the land of Dunscore, which they shall surrender at ferme. This shall be observed faithfully or the opposing side shall pay 1,000 marks to the Roman Church.
