Description
Pope Alexander III writes to [William], king of Scots, recalling both his devotion and that of his brother Malcolm, formerly king, to Alexander himself and to ‘the church of God’. The king’s prayers are requested for those dear to the pontiff, and they are commended to the king without hesitation. He surely knows that the archbishop of Canterbury has endured exile for the liberty of his church. Alexander has heard that William’s brother and his other ancestors have always accorded filial devotion to that prelate, to his predecessors, and to that church.
