Description
Patrick, earl of Dunbar, announces that when Master William of Greenlaw had solemnly given a certain land in feu of Hassington (BWK) that he had by gift of Robert de Muschamp, earl’s tenant, to Melrose Abbey in earl’s court at Edrom, and Master William of Greenlaw dissaised himself and solemnly gave sasine of it to Melrose Abbey. So that abbey may have peaceful and perpetual possession in future times, abbot and convent and earl agreed in presence of his lord, Alexander, king of Scotland, and his barons, that he has promised, granted and by his present charter obligated himself and his heirs to acquit said holding to Melrose Abbey and to warrant and defend it in perpituity. Melrose Abbey is to hold it in free and perpetual alms by those bounds by which said Master William held it, and with all pertinents, liberties and easements, and with common pasture of said villa of Hassington and with free entrance and exit to said pasture, free and quit of all secular service, exaction and demand. Furthermore, he has taken an oath on behalf of himself and his heirs of his body and has fully bound himself and them to put these things into effect, submitting himself and them to authority of bishop of Glasgow so that in addition to power and authority of king by which they ought to be and wish to be constrained, bishop may compel earl and his heirs through ecclesiastical censure to observe everything above, if all right of redress is removed and all means of appeal exhausted.
